YIP Book Club: Philadelphia Battlefields

  • 200 South Broad Street, 5th floor Suite 520 Philadelphia, PA, 19102 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join us for a conversation with the author of Philadelphia Battlefields: Disruptive Campaigns and Upset Elections in a Changing City, Professor John Kromer, of the Fels Institute of Government at the University of Pennsylvania.

In his book, Professor Kromer delves into key local campaigns in Philadelphia from 1951 to 2019 that were extraordinarily successful despite the opposition of the city's political establishment. Using data-mapping tools, he examines these upset elections and the social, economic, and demographic trends that influenced them. He analyzes urban political dynamics through case studies of successful campaigns, such as Rebecca Rhynhart's landslide victory over a veteran incumbent for Philadelphia City Controller, activist Chaka Fattah's effective use of grassroots organizing skills to win a seat in Congress, and Maria Quiñones-Sánchez's hard-fought struggle to become the first Hispanic woman to win a City Council seat, among others.

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a discussion with Professor Kromer and learn more about the insights and analysis he has gained from his extensive research into these campaigns. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in local politics, campaigns, and elections to gain a deeper understanding of Philadelphia's political landscape.

SOYP 2022 Bethesda Project Event

Calling all artists and creatives! Bethesda Project is a nonprofit organization that provides shelter, housing and supportive services across 15 locations to adults experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia. Some of our sites have walls that are gray and boring, and we love to bring some color/excitement during these challenging times. The decorations can be fall-related (i.e. you could print out the template here and decorate) or just general messages letting our guests and residents know you are thinking about them. You could also make greeting-style cards we can give out - one time a group pasted in word searches, and everyone loved them!

Bring any materials you think you will need to this virtual call (i.e. construction paper, scissors, markers), and learn about homelessness in Philadelphia and Bethesda Project’s life-saving mission.

SOYP 2022 5th Square Event

Join 5th Square for a discussion about Fair Fares.

Reigster here!

Some of the biggest barriers to access for many Philadelphians is transportation. This event will feather 5th Square leaders and partners highlighting what it took to enact these changes at SEPTA at the grassroots level, lessons learned, and what upcoming projects young people in Philadelphia can get plugged into to advocate for better transit access in our city. Join us on Wednesday 9/28 for this virtual event.
